Fermentools Review!!

Fermenting food has been around for a LONG TIME!
Before refrigerators were around, fermenting food was one of the ways that food was preserved.
We now know the health benefits that come along with fermenting food.

I'm not going to explain all those benefits (you can read about them online), but I am going to talk about how and why we ferment as a family as well as some pretty cool simple equipment from Fermentools that has become a regular part of our lives!!

We ferment foods primarily because it's a cheap way to get probiotics into our diet. I cannot afford to put all my 6 children on probiotics so fermenting foods right on our counter top is the next best solution. All it takes is salt and water!

We also ferment food because I garden and don't want all the food I get to go to waste. When I have a large harvest of bell peppers, carrots, hot peppers, cucumbers ect, fermenting these fresh vegetables adds an extra kick to them that simply canning or freezing doesn't do. It captures the freshness and adds to the health value.

We ferment foods because it adds depth and flavor to basic meals. Fermented habanero sauce, fermented tomato salsas, fermented raw milk sour cream, fermented spicy sauerkraut and so many more all add something different when placed on the dish at hand.

We ferment foods because it's an incredible learning/home-educating experience. My kids get to see the changes food goes through when the natural bacteria in the environment start to break down the sugars and starches in our food. They get to physically see a loaf of sourdough bread rise, a glass of milk cultivate into kefir, and cucumbers turn into probiotic rich pickles!

We ferment foods because it brings culture to my children. Something American's have lost tremendously is our culture and roots when it comes to so many things including our knowledge and appreciation of real, living food. All our food is so processed and tastes so different then it used to. We aren't concerned with preserving foods and think it's just too much work to take that extra step to freshness and health. I really want my children to appreciate working the ground, growing the food, preserving the food and creating some amazing dishes to share with friends and family.

Fermentools is a resource that got our family excited about fermenting about a year ago. We were gifted their 6-pack kit as well as a couple packs of the Himalayan Powder Salt. We've been experimenting and using these resources over the last six months and I must say, these tools (as far as our experience goes) guarantees a perfect ferment every single time!

A simple starter kit from Fermentools includes the following elements:

(1) Stainless Steel Lid: this lid fits all wide mouth mason jars perfectly.

(2) Glass Fermenting weight: This is by FAR my favorite part of this kit! It weighs whatever you're fermenting down perfectly keeping your produce well below the brine and ensuring you don't have any mold growth on the top of your ferment!

(3) Air Lock System with Gasket and Rubber Stoppers: This allows gasses to escape your jar, but keeps everything else from entering your ferment.

(4) Hymalain Posder Salt: a specifically chosen salt for it's high mineral content.

Here you can see all the products we received:

Fermentools also offers a blog that has lots of recipes, tips, and encouragement in your fermenting journey.

Fermenting is truly an art as well as a science. The combinations and flavors are endless. There are so many more tastes, sauces, side dishes, beverages, and desserts that you have to discover!!

So check out Fermentool and order your first kit of tools and get started!!
It's become a part of our daily lives.

Speaking of Traditions...

Speaking of Traditions....

If you read my last post, I talked a little about Traditions and the holidays and how we have been trying the "Jesse Tree" this year, with our own twist on it.

Well for the last couple years, we decided to start something for Thanksgiving that blessed our neighbors and opened up opportunities to share Jesus with them!

And what says, "We love Jesus and we love you"  more then HOT CINNAMON ROLLS ON A COLD MORNING?!?

We stay up late the night before Thanksgiving and make two large batches of cinnamon rolls.

Gluten to pass out to neighbors and Gluten-Free/Dairy Free for our family.

The next morning, while the cinnamon rolls are baking (and filling our home with the most wonderfully warming smell of cinnamon and yeast), we start up the cream cheese frosting.

We then COVER the PIPING HOT cinnamon rolls in icing, bundle up, and head outside!!

We go door to door and whoever answers gets a cinnamon roll, one per person in the house.

We actually had a few neighbors RUN to the door and greet us, "Oh we hoped it was YOU GUYS! We've been waiting for you!!"

We had to explain to Elias that we had a second batch in the house for us to eat.
We passed the last three off to one neighbor and Elias was yelling,
"NO!
DON'T TAKE THOSE CINNAMON ROLLS!!!
NO!!!!"

By the time we got back, our rolls had just finished.
We frosted them, ate them, and drank some fresh coffee with cream.
(Yes, I allow my kids to drink coffee now and again... its way better then pop or loads of juice!)

Even Aryeh enjoyed his first cinnamon rolls.

And after Elias has his fill of 4 cinnamon rolls, he curled up in my lap as we snuggled and watched the remainder of the Macy's Day parade.

We then got dressed and ready to go to Alex's family's house.

Saturday morning we did Thanksgiving at my dad and step mom's house.
We also spent Sunday evening at my mom and step dad's.

Three Thanksgivings filled with the people I LOVE the most!
My family!!

You know, during Thanksgiving especially, but really anytime I'm with my family, I think back to not even ten years ago. My family was divided. Destitute. Only my dad and I walking with the Lord. I remember day after day pouring my heart out to God pleading for my family and interceding for their walks with Jesus.

It's amazing to now see both sisters, married, having children, and so IN LOVE with Jesus!!!!

I have the relationship with them that I've longed for my whole life, but never have been able to have.

God's in the business of REDEEMING!
DON'T LOST HOPE!!

Now that's something to be Thankful for!

Raw Pancakes and Almond Milk

Almond Milk
Take about 1 1/2 cups of almonds and soak in about 6-8 cups of water overnight.
In the morning add some cinnamon, vanilla, and bit of honey or other sweetener.
Blend well.
Take a cheesecloth (or kitchen towel) and pour milk through the towel catching the almond "pulp" in the cloth.
Squeeze all the milk out of the almond pulp and place pulp in a bowl.
Place milk in Glass Jar in the fridge.

Easy Raw Pancakes
Take the almond milk pulp and mix with a nut butter (almond, peanut, or sunflower seed butter).
Mix some spices that you prefer such as cinnamon, nutmeg, maple syrup ect.
You can add in extra things such as flax seeds or chia seeds ect.
Simply form into cakes and top with syrup, jelly, or fresh fruit.

My kids LOVE both of these!
Quick.
Easy.
Healthy.

Raw Ice Cream

RAW ICE CREAM!!
DAIRY-FREE
SUGAR FREE
YAY!!
Chocolate Ice Cream
Step One: Take Banana's (and/or some mangoes)

Step Two: Cut them up and place them in the freezer until completely frozen (a few hours)

Step Three: Place the frozen banana peices in the food processor along with some cocoa powder, honey or other sweetener (agave nector ect), and a bit of nut milk. You can add a little bit of vanilla or cinnamon too.

Step Four: Place in a fancy cup (if you have one, like a martini glass) and eat right away :)

**Experiment with other things**
Sorbet (Strawberries, peaches ect)
Add some keifer instead of nut milk for a sour kick
Try different extracts (mint, almond)
Add some home made chocolate syrup or strawberry syrup.
