How to Get Ammonia Smell Out Of Cloth Diapers

I have noticed my cloth diapers started smelling REALLY REALLY REALLY bad!!

I have heard so many complaints from cloth diaper users. Specifically the ones that use the pocket diaper inserts that are "super absorbent". I believe the ammonia smell comes from a build up of pee in these inserts that causes them to smell like ammonia! Yuk!!

I tried a number of things to get rid of the smell (baking soda, dish soap, different washing styles, different detergent ect.) and the ONLY thing that worked was this...

VINEGAR!

I don't know why, but soaking the diapers in some warm vinegar water took the ammonia smell right out! I put quite a bit of vinegar in the bucket and soaked them for a day or two before putting them in the wash.

  2. I have a big black bucket that I put mine in... I would say 1/4 to 1/5 vinegar and the rest with warm/hot water.

  3. thanks! they are soaking now!! hope it helps! Do you only do this when they start to smell--or are you doing this trick before every wash?

  4. I have been doing it every wash but you could probably just do it whenever they smell.
