With our large family (six children) and busy lifestyle with work, ministry, and homeschool, we stick to the basics for our elementary aged children. Reading, Writing, and Math. When there is an interest in a specific topic we read about, we’ll branch off and explore that topic exploring the realms of science, history, geography and the arts. We’ve never found anything fun, simple, and intriguing to add into our simple cycle of daily school work that would assist us in this journey of curiosity. The world is so BIG and full of NEW things for children this age!
WriteBonnieRose has created a science collection that we had the privilege of reviewing called Learning About Science Collection, Level 3 (Cursive). This came in PDF form allowing me to print several copies for my elementary students. It included a set of 7 main topics including:
- Kinds of Animals and How they Live
- What Going on Inside Plants?
- Life in the Ocean’s Hidden Zones
- Forecasting and Understanding the Weather
- Discovering Rocks, Minerals, & Crystals
- Exploring the Earth’s Landforms
- Energy and Its Many Forms
I believe what I loved most about Learning About Science Collection, Level 3 (Cursive) is the non-threatening and simplistic approach it takes. The pages are black and white with pictures that can be colored in as you go along. Since this is the Cursive Collection, certain key words are offered to be written in cursive pertaining to the topic at hand. Each set has a short comprehension quiz at the end. My kids loved making their guesses and paging back through their packet to see who answered correctly.
I was amazed at how much information they retained and how excited they got about things from this curriculum! We started with "Discovering Rocks, Minerals, & Crystals" because one of my children has a keen interest in rocks and crystals. We briefly touched on the period table of elements and learned about a few elements. We then proceeded to learn about the basic three types of rocks and learned about specific rocks under each category. As we read, I simultaneously googled photos of each rock and pulled it up on my phone so my kids could color the black and white photo to match.
I noticed as we went for walks and even at the park, the kids would spend a lot of time digging in the sand of trailing off into the woods in search for “sandstone” or “granite”. They were constantly rummaging through their rock collection using their Learning About Science Collection, Level 3 (Cursive) packet to attempt to identify what rocks they had in their possession.
We advanced onto “Forecasting and Understanding the Weather”. We accompanied the pages of weather tools and dangerous types of severe weather with some library books and YouTube Videos since the kids were very interested in what an earthquake was like, how a thermometer worked, and what meteorologists look like.
Learning About Science Collection, Level 3 (Cursive) can be opened and explored immediately. No prepping, planing or outside resources needed. It’s open and unstructured enough to rest in for a while or to quickly move through to gain a basic understanding of a concept. This approach to science is not overwhelming and cultivates a love of exploration as opposed to a rigid curriculum. You can add more, or just learn the basics. There are no lesson plans, to time restraints, no grade levels.
I purchased 3-ring-binders to keep their papers in since they spent so much time coloring the pictures in and personalizing everything as they learned.
Do we recommend? Yes! This is a great fit for my big family and busy schedule! I have seen it stir in my kids a curiosity for things bigger then what they are, as well as an interest in things they would normally run right past. The price is very reasonable, $12-$14.
